Dusty Springfield performing live

Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien was, she claimed, ‘destined to become a librarian’. Luckily for us, that didn’t happen. This is classic Dusty Springfield, emotional, vulnerable, and sooo silky with that soft voice, Made all the more remarkable given the tumultuous recording sessions, that led to Dusty walking out on the sessions, finishing the album off in New York. Although this album wasn’t such a great commercial success it is widely regarded as her best, with the likes of Son of a Preacher Man and Windmills Of Your Mind.

Incredibly, during the Memphis sessions, Springfield suggested to Jerry Wexler (one of the heads of Atlantic Records and the producer) that he should sign the newly formed UK band Led Zeppelin. She knew bass guitarist, John Paul Jones, from his session work on Dusty’s earlier albums. Without ever having seen them and partly on her advice, Wexler signed Led Zeppelin to a $200,000 deal with Atlantic, the rest, as they say, is history.
