There is a lot of ‘chat’ about AI Chat software at the moment.  As a HiFi enthusiast and reviewer, it begs the question are they any good?  I thought it might be interesting for an AI Chat to review a HiFi product.  The Cyrus Classic Amp is an excellent product and seems a good candidate, let’s see what ChatGPT thinks of it.

I’ve put this article in ‘News’, it is not a review, HF&MS’s proper review is here, what do you think? I’m just trying to establish how good these AI are, I’m sure they will improve and it will be worth going through the same exercise in 6 months and beyond!

HF&MS commentary is in italics.

ChatGPT introduces the Cyrus Classic Amp as follows:

The Cyrus Classic Amp is a high-end stereo amplifier from Cyrus Audio, a UK-based manufacturer of high-performance audio equipment. The Classic Amp is designed to provide a high-quality, minimalist amplifier with a focus on performance and simplicity.

Good start!

HF&MS then typed in “Does the Cyrus classic amp have a phono stage?” ChatGPT said:

Yes, the Cyrus Classic Amp has a built-in phono stage, which allows you to connect a turntable directly to the amplifier and enjoy vinyl records without needing a separate phono preamp. The phono stage is designed to be highly accurate and low-noise, and it is compatible with both Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges. This feature makes the Cyrus Classic Amp a convenient choice for vinyl enthusiasts who want to simplify their setup and enjoy high-quality sound from their turntable.

HF&MS then typed in “Does the Cyrus classic amp have a DAC?” ChatGPT said:

No, the Cyrus Classic Amp does not have a built-in DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter). It is a stereo amplifier with analog inputs that is designed to be used with other sources that have built-in DACs, such as CD players, streaming devices, and other digital sources. However, Cyrus Audio does offer a range of separate DACs that can be paired with the Classic Amp or other amplifiers to provide high-quality digital-to-analog conversion.

This is a pretty good start, the spec is almost there with an incorrect 4 Ohms power output, it should be 112W and the Cyrus Classic Amp DOES have a really rather good DAC built-in.

Performance of the Cyrus Classic Amp by ChatGPT

HF&MS then asked, “How does the Cyrus Classic Amp perform?” ChatGPT said:

Many reviewers praise the Cyrus Classic Amp for its powerful, detailed, and dynamic sound, as well as its ability to drive a wide range of speakers. The built-in phono stage is also highly regarded for its accuracy and low noise. However, some reviewers note that the amplifier can be a bit unforgiving with poor-quality recordings and that it can be quite expensive compared to other high-end amplifiers. Overall, the Cyrus Classic Amp appears to be a well-regarded and well-built amplifier that delivers high-quality sound and features.

HF&MS typed in “Is the Cyrus Classic Amp musical?”

As an AI language model, I cannot provide subjective opinions or personal experiences. However, based on available reviews and feedback, many reviewers have praised the Cyrus Classic Amp for its musicality and ability to deliver a natural and engaging sound. The amplifier is known for its dynamic, detailed, and transparent sound, which allows the listener to connect with the music and enjoy it on a deeper level. Of course, individual opinions may vary, and it’s always best to audition the amplifier in person to determine if it meets your personal preferences and expectations.

It is clear that subjective statements are beyond the AI and I really like the way this is acknowledged by ChatGPT. I say this final sentence in most reviews tbh!

HF&MS then asked, “what is the tonal balance of the Cyrus Classic Amp ?” ChatGPT said:

The tonal balance of the Cyrus Classic Amp is generally described as being neutral and transparent, with a focus on accuracy and detail. The amplifier is designed to deliver a clean and uncolored sound that faithfully reproduces the source material.

Many reviewers have praised the Cyrus Classic Amp for its ability to provide a detailed and transparent sound, with good clarity and resolution. The amplifier is also known for its ability to deliver a wide and well-defined soundstage, with precise imaging and separation of instruments.

Of course, the tonal balance of an amplifier can also depend on other factors, such as the speakers and source equipment used. However, based on available reviews and technical specifications, the Cyrus Classic Amp appears to be a well-regarded amplifier that delivers a neutral and accurate sound.

HF&MS then asked, “How is the headphone output in the Cyrus Classic Amp?” ChatGPT said:

The Cyrus Classic Amp features a built-in headphone amplifier that is designed to provide high-quality performance. The headphone output uses a dedicated amplifier circuit and is designed to deliver a clean and detailed sound with good dynamics and low distortion.

Many reviewers have praised the headphone output of the Cyrus Classic Amp for its ability to drive a wide range of headphones, from low-impedance in-ear monitors to high-impedance over-ear headphones. The output is also known for its good control and separation of instruments, as well as its ability to deliver a wide and spacious soundstage.

It’s worth noting that the headphone output on the Cyrus Classic Amp is a 6.35mm (1/4-inch) jack, so if your headphones have a different connector, you may need to use an adapter.

The AI has got the jack size incorrect here, it is a 3.5mm jack, at the rear of the unit.

What a great answer, I agree with the final paragraph wholeheartedly! In fact, I’m sure I’ve used these words!

Thoughts

Hopefully, AI has a way to go and the whole point of HiFi reviewing is its subjectivity! It is why it is important (to me) to be clear on the equipment being used, and the music played and to cut the jargon, which is why this site was established.

Although the AI got a few things wrong, the DAC thing is bad, it looks like the right question is an important factor in getting a good answer from AI.  I really like the fact it is clear that anything subjective is well-signposted, which hints at some clear thinking from the developers.

Finally, for the record, HF&MS will never use AI to write reviews ever!
