This is it, smokey electronic fireside jazz, I absolutely love this.  The quiet electrification of Miles Davis with Josef Zawinul, Organ, and Chick Corea on the electric piano with John McLaughlin on the electric guitar represents the quiet before the storm, that will be Bitches Brew.  This album, with 2 extended session tracks is just so calm, it is rhythmic, with no melody, certainly at the outset.

Miles Davis’ capacity to assemble incredible artists continues on this album after he coaxed one of the greatest line-ups to collaborate on Kind of Blue (John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb).  On In a Silent Way, Herbie Hancock’s piano and Wayne Shorter, soprano sax join Miles, Chick, and Josef to deliver such epic dynamics in this album it is breathtaking.  I always wondered how Herbie Hancock came up with the 15 minutes of Chameleon, I think these sessions had an influence.

I’m looking back and note that Pet Sounds only got 7.4 and Sgt Pepper got a 9, this is an 8.9 for me, it’s Abbey Road next….
