After a bunch of poor films (Elvis did nearly 30 by the end of 1968!) and the success of the ’68 Comeback Special, Elvis in Memphis represents a return to some kind of form by the King of them all. The tracks on the album are generally, in my view, rather bland and uninspiring, with some good songs in there. Until you get to In the Ghetto, a protest song concerning the cycle of poverty and crime in Chicago. It is a gritty song that ends with another young boy being born and joining the cycle of violence.

Mystifyingly, to me, this album is described, variously, as Elvis’ greatest album. I’m just not getting that, I like it but I’m ready for the Velvet Underground now.
