Aged just 37 years old, Johnny Cash returned to prison, this time in San Quentin, California following his Folsom Prison outing. By now he had married June Carter the year before. Indeed he duet with her sweetly on Darlin’ Companion, one of the highlights.

Strangely (to me) this album is recorded for Granada TV in the UK, I can’t fathom this but there we are.  Nonetheless, the album is vibrant, spiritual and humourous and Cash even wrote a track, the day before the performance called San Quentin.  The audience goes wild, the lyrics are right on point, for them!

San Quentin, I hate every inch of you.
You’ve cut me and you scarred me through and through.
….

San Quentin, what good do you think you do?
Do you think I’ll be different when you’re through?

San Quentin, may you rot and burn in hell.
May your walls fall and may I live to tell.

San Quentin, I hate every inch of you

The ad-libs and outtakes are a huge amount of fun, with the San Quentin inmates lapping up the easy-going Cash.
