MoFi SourcePoint 10 exploded

UK Distributor Karma AV has this week introduced a new two-way loudspeaker called MoFi Sourcepoint 10. The speakers represent 18 months of research and development by Andrew Jones, who has previously worked with ELAC, KEF, TAD amongst others. His brief was to deliver an impactful bass and think about the fact that throwback (or retro let’s say) looks are trending at the moment. Jones prefers concentric drivers as a means to control cone vibration and realised he needed a 10-inch cone to manage this and deliver the deep bass, in the brief he was given.  Jones then realised he probably needed to build his own cones, enclosures and tweeter arrangements.  Jones says:

Regardless of what an audio product costs, my passion is to deliver a level of sound quality and an experience that is far beyond the asking price

The outcome is a 1.25-inch soft dome tweeter with a ‘wide-roll surround and large-diameter voice coil, capable of working at the 1.6kHz crossover point’.  The 10-inch cone uses a pulp paper mix that optimises the resonant behaviour needed and supports the tweeter waveguide appropriately.  This wider surround extends the frequency response of the tweeter.  The MoFi Sourcepoint 10 uses a twin drive system using high-flux neodymium magnets. This arrangement creates a symmetrical magnetic field to reduce distortion and deliver ‘exceptional clarity’.  Jones Adds:

It is not enough to simply optimise the frequency response of the woofer and tweeter, it is also critically important to minimise distortion in the motor structure of the drive unit. If the motor has distortion, it will generate new frequencies outside of the original signal. We have been very deliberate with the design of the motor to reduce these distortions.

The MoFi Sourcepoint 10 have a substantial 1-inch thick MDF cabinet on all sides, internally braced and the front baffle is optimised to ‘reduce diffraction’.  The speakers have an easy driving sensitivity of 91dB and go down to 42Hz.

MoFi SourcePoint 10 loudspeakers are available next January at a typical retail price of  £4,500.00(inc VAT (pair)).  There are dedicated stands at £550.00 (inc VAT (pair)).
